Skullcap has been adapted for use in modern medicine by the discovery of an anti-cancer chemical

A partnership between UK and Chinese academics has revealed the evolutionary secrets that allow the medicinal herb known as barbed skullcap to create cancer-fighting chemicals.

The skullcap (Scutellaria barbata), also known as banzhilian in China, has a genomic sequence that was assembled by the CEPAMS team using DNA sequencing technology.

This provided the genetic data—a microevolutionary history—required to pinpoint how the plant creates the substance scutebarbatine A, which has anticancer properties.

The primary metabolite exhibits activity against cancer cells but not non-cancer cells, which is extremely significant for an anti-cancer metabolite, according to Professor Cathie Martin, group leader at the John Innes Centre and one of the study’s authors.

The herb is cooked in water for two hours in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where the extract is then dried to make a powder and consumed as a decoction (concentrated liquid).

Now that the genes responsible for the metabolic mechanism underlying the herb’s anti-cancer effect have been identified, researchers are close to being able to synthesize bigger amounts of chemicals more quickly and efficiently. CEPAMS, a collaboration between the John Innes Centre and the Chinese Academy of Science, is in charge of the research that was published in the journal Molecular Plant. The Royal Society also provided funding for the project.

According to Professor Martin, “This is a terrific partnership about producing new therapeutic leads from natural resources and illustrates the usefulness of focusing on the microevolution of a species.”

The Skullcap genus has been utilized in TCM for ages to treat a variety of illnesses. Clinical studies have demonstrated that using Scutellaria barbata-based preparations during chemotherapy can lower the risk of metastatic cancers.

Dr. Evangelos Tatsis, the CEPAMS Group Leader based in Shanghai, remarked, “For a very long time, natural products served as the starting point for the development of novel pharmaceuticals. We can create new anti-cancer medications by following the path of the traditional Chinese plants, and this research represents an important step in that regard.”

Plant natural compounds like vinblastine and taxol are utilized in clinical settings as anticancer medications. Plant-based traditional remedies have long been used to generate leads for the development of novel therapeutics.

One of the systems with the most empirical data on the medicinal effects of herbal treatments is TCM.
