Key Publishing Timelines

Publishing Milestone Description Average Timeline

Days to First Editorial Decision The initial editorial decision—either desk rejection or progression to external peer review—is communicated to authors. 2–3 days
Peer Review Period Assigned reviewers (minimum two) are given 14 days to evaluate the manuscript and submit their reports. 3–4 weeks
Days to Acceptance (After Review) The total duration from submission to final editorial acceptance, including revisions. 30–45 days
Acceptance to Online Publication Copyediting, typesetting, DOI registration, and online publication. 7–10 days

These timelines may vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the submission and reviewer availability, but we are committed to delivering quick and efficient decisions while maintaining rigorous quality control.

Biological Sciences archiving policy is as follows:

Self-Archiving Policy

Submitted Article (Pre-Print)

The author’s submitted version is the non-peer-reviewed version of an article as originally submitted for potential publication in Biological Sciences. Authors may make their pre-print article available by posting it on their personal websites, an institutional repository, or their funding body’s designated archive. Upon publication, the Article Version of Record must be acknowledged with a citation that includes the author’s name, year of publication, article title, journal title, digital object identifier (DOI), and a hyperlink to the Article Version of Record on the journal website.

Accepted Article (Post-Print)

The author’s accepted article is the version that has been accepted for publication but has not yet undergone copyediting or layout formatting. Authors may make their post-print article available on their personal websites, an institutional repository, or their funding body’s designated archive. Upon publication, the Article Version of Record must be acknowledged with a citation that includes the author’s name, year of publication, article title, journal title, digital object identifier (DOI), and a hyperlink to the Article Version of Record on the journal website.

Published Article (Version of Record)

The final published article is the version of record. Authors may make the final published article available online, including posting it to a preprint server, personal website, institutional repository, or their funding body’s designated archive. Upon publication, the Article Version of Record must be acknowledged with a citation that includes the author’s name, year of publication, article title, journal title, digital object identifier (DOI), and a hyperlink to the Article Version of Record on the journal website.

This archiving policy aligns with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and ensures that Biological Sciences maintains the highest standards of digital preservation and accessibility.
